Harriet Tubman
Jun 06, 2020What seems like such a long time ago now, when I was battling to not only stay sane but fighting for my life, I would often look to a quote that was framed on a wall opposite my bedhead. There has been doubt as to whether the quote I shall share with you did in fact come from Harriet Tubman, however, seeing as though this was the way that I first learned of this remarkable lady, I shall attribute it to her.
"Every great dream begins with a dreamer. Always remember, you have within you the strength, the patience, and the passion to reach for the stars to change the world."
- Harriet Tubman
Whilst some discount that these words were written by a woman of color, others agree that they were. And for me, Harriet with her courage, love and wisdom held my hand when I faced my own valley of the shadow of death. With her deep affection for God and guidance from Him in premonitions, she went on to change the world in the time that she lived.
When I think of Harriet, I think of her great love to serve God and those around her. I think of her wisdom and strength to start a movement to abolish slavery. When I learned about her early life and the traumas she faced, after my years spent reading her insightful words, I sensed her courage. But more than this, I could feel her spirit. That she was not limited by the roles the ego has made up. She listened within and made the change, and she changed the world by following her dream.
When everyone said no, she said yes.
As turmoil surrounds the globe and #blacklivesmatter becomes a statement of respect, equality and love, I wanted to share with you the story of Harriet and how she held me, when I too was growing in despair. But who was Harriet? Harriet was a black woman born around 1822 into slavery. Yet, she did not settle for the life ahead of her. Escaping slavery herself, she made many missions to save others from slavery via an Underground Railroad. There is so much more to her incredible life and her commitment to changing the world for the better, as she eventually became a political activist in the US. She really is an icon of courage and freedom.
As the fight is now on for black people, for their freedom from the racism that they face, and rightly deserve the equality, respect and love of all, I can say that I hear you. But I want you to hear me. The true cause of the pain and punishment is the belief in separation from Source, when we gave the truth of Perfect Love away for the specialness of ego-identification. Whilst you sit in the effects of form, and blame another for your position by projecting guilt, anger, rage, and offering vitriol, abuse, judgment, attack etc. you cannot undo the fear and return to love.
Hidden underneath this pain that is moving through the collective is the truth of sameness for All. Where there is no race or religion, no class or country, no separateness or sin, but the truth of Perfect Love that is hidden within. In order to truly heal, you must learn to undo the ego, by forgiving the barriers to the awareness of love's presence inside.
To Harriet Tubman, thank you for changing the world. For being brave enough to answer your calling. And for when I was moving through my own slavery of ego thinking, thank you for being a guide of light in the midst of my turmoil. Remember, the ego might seek to keep us separate, but we are the same in truth. The being of Perfect Love that sleeps, dreaming they are sinful of separating from Source.
Much love, peace, and Truforgiveness,
